SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The final round of the 46th Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle came down to the wire with Brigitte Dunne, 19, of Camarillo Calif., and Haley Moore, 18, of Escondido, Calif. finishing with an exciting sudden death playoff. Dunne birdied the first hole to clinch the championship with a final score of 210 (-6) for the three-day championship to win the Kachina award. Brigitte follows in the footsteps of fellow SMU teammate, Kenzie Wright, who claimed the Championship in 2015. “I played solid all day even with an unplayable lie and hitting into the water. I just kept telling myself to come back fighting. I was able to make 6 birdies so I was putting really well,” said Dunne.   The Miracle League of Arizona has a mission to provide a fun, safe and successful baseball experience for individuals with special needs. Although the fully accessible stadium has just one location (North Scottsdale), families travel from all across Maricopa county to enjoy a day of fun at the baseball park. Volunteers pair up with athletes and provide friendship and support during the games as an enjoyable and rewarding volunteer service activity. Opening their gates in 2011 with just two teams and a handful of participants, MLAZ now has 18 teams and plays four days a week to accommodate its 250-plus athletes. They recently added a youth competitive league for children between the ages of 5 and 13 that are ready to practice at an improved skill and knowledge level of the game with outs and strikes.  MLAZ takes pride in offering this opportunity free of charge to the families of these special need athletes who have to cover numbers of therapy and medical costs.  Thunderbirds Charities has been supporting MLAZ from the beginning and is honored to donate $25,000 towards the ever expanding program. Several Thunderbirds were on hand to help celebrate Phoenix Children’s new emergency department’s “Topping Out” ceremony, a tradition held when the last beam is placed atop a structure during its construction. This was the final steel beam to be hoisted to the top of Arizona’s new Emergency Department, only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders – a much needed expansion project that was helped by a $500,000 donation from Thunderbirds Charities in June of 2015. Construction workers, hospital staff members and partners within the community gathered as the clinking of iron stopped and the ceremony began. Signatures and well wishes covered the beam as some very official patients joined the construction team and helped guide the very last beam in place. An evergreen tree topped the steel frame, a tradition symbolizing good luck for future occupants and continued growth. The Thunderbirds, hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open Presented by Ak-Chin Indian Community, raised a record $9,369,873 for local charities through proceeds raised from the 2016 tournament, Thunderbirds Big Chief Dan Mahoney announced today. This is the highest single-year charitable donation in tournament history, breaking last year’s total of $9,060,731, and marks the second consecutive year that The Thunderbirds have eclipsed $9 million in charitable dollars raised in a single year. Thanks to a $50,000 grant from Thunderbird Charities, Circle the City has a new van to transport patients experiencing homelessness between its two facilities — the Medical Respite Center and The Parsons Family Health Center — as well as to off-site appointments and to and from Circle the City’s mobile medical clinic. The van is wheelchair-accessible and has seating for up to six patients, including two wheelchairs. Circle the City works to improve healthcare accessibility for people experiencing homelessness and decrease their reliance on emergency services including 911 calls. Furnishing transportation to this under-served population will assist in establishing integrated primary care, case management, behavioral health, and substance abuse treatment services. Recently, Thunderbirds Charities donated $163,491 to Jewish Family & Children’s Services, in honor of Thunderbird Jerry Lewkowitz. The funding was in support of the medical wing expansion at the recently opened integrated medical and behavioral health center in the underserved Maryvale neighborhood of Phoenix. More than 1,300 athletes competed in the Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games in early May at Raymond S. Hellis in Glendale, with the competitors participating in events ranging from Track and Field, Tennis, Powerlifting, Volleyball and Kayaking. This annual event is the largest on the Special Olympics calendar each year and includes an Olympic-style opening ceremony, torch run, parade of athletes and victory dance. The Thunderbirds, hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, are strong supporters of Special Olympics of Arizona, and have donated more than $3 million to this outstanding organization since 1979. Glendale resident, Eric Ghim, topped Jake Chanen with a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture the Boys title at the 2015 Thunderbird Invitational, contested at Papago Golf Course March 7-8. Ghim carded eight birdies during the two-day event on his way to a 72-69–141 winning score. Set to graduate from Sandra Day O’Connor High School in 2016, Ghim adds his latest victory to a host of achievements. Arizona Helping Hands thanks Thunderbirds Charities for their $25,000 grant in support of our Helping Hands for Foster Kids (“HHFK”) program. This program provides beds, cribs, clothing, diapers and other essential needs to the over 16,000 children in Arizona’s foster care system. HHFK was begun in 2013 and as the word has spread to caseworkers and foster parent groups, the growth in services has been phenomenal. 60 beds were provided to foster parents in 2013, over 500 were provided in 2014. The Thunderbird grant will help AHH continue to expand service to foster families who step up to care for these children. “Children in foster care are frequently moved into new situations with nothing but the clothes on their back. To be able to provide assistance to these families truly does make a difference”, says Executive Director Dan Shufelt. Hospice of the Valley has been awarded a $15,000 grant from Thunderbirds Charities for the New Song Center for Grieving Children. The grant supports the Enduring Ties program, which serves children ages 4 or older who have experienced the death of a sibling, regardless of cause of death or whether the child received hospice care. Parents and guardians of children also participate in a support group that meets separately from the children and teens, who are divided into age-appropriate groups. It is the first program of its kind in Maricopa County. There is no cost to enroll. “Hospice of the Valley and their New Song Center serve such an important role here in the Valley,” said Thunderbirds Big Chief Tom King. “And while we hope no child ever loses a sibling, sadly we know it’s an unavoidable reality. Last fall, Thunderbirds Charities donated $100,000 to Phoenix Children’s Hospital to purchase a new Crews’n Healthmobile, a mobile medical unit that provides free, comprehensive medical services directly to children and young adults up to the age of 25 who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. On Tuesday, December 9th, the new Crews’n Healthmobile was unveiled in front of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The unit is specially outfitted with three exam rooms and the latest pediatric medical technology. This is a second mobile medical unit and will expand services throughout the valley. The original Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) was established by a partnership in 2000, with Children’s Health Fund and Home Base Youth Services. Over the past 15 years, the program has grown to include the mobile medical units and host 18 weekly clinics. Over the summer, when many of us were escaping the Arizona heat, Chandler student Emma Baier was taking 1st place in Arizona and 2nd place nationally in the InvestWrite financial essay competition. InvestWrite, made possible by the Thunderbirds and delivered by the Arizona Council on Economic Education, challenges 4th – 12th graders to analyze investments and recommend portfolio allocations targeting long term financial goals. Emma Baier was among 20,000 students nationwide who took the InvestWrite challenge, developing the personal financial savvy needed to make real-world financial decisions. In an effort to improve the life and health of children and families in the Phoenix area, Thunderbirds Charities have partnered with Starlight Children’s Foundation and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center to support pediatric patients through sponsorship of two Starlight® Site treatment rooms and a Starlight® Tablet. These generous gifts will help the hospital support more than 5,000 children and families every year, directly at the point of care. A ribbon-cutting dedication and tour of the treatment rooms took place at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center from 4 – 5 p.m. on June 4. The ceremony was hosted by Tom Dickson, CEO of Banner Thunderbird Medical Center and Tom King, Big Chief of The Thunderbirds, host organization of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Other ceremony participants included Wendy Pauker, the hospital’s Child Life Manager, Starlight representative Allison Gentry who designed the rooms, in addition to current patients and family members from the hospital.
