Thunderbirds Charities Awards $30,000 Grant to Billy’s Place to Support Grieving Children and Families

Billy’s Place, a nonprofit organization that supports grieving kiddos and families, is honored to receive a three-year, $30,000 grant from Thunderbirds Charities. This funding will help sustain and expand the organization’s Grief Peer Support Groups, which provide crucial services to those navigating the loss of a loved one.

Founded in 2012, Billy’s Place was inspired by a young boy’s journey through grief after losing his father. Recognizing the lack of grief support services in Phoenix’s West Valley, his family created a compassionate space where children and families could process their loss together. In the coming year, Billy’s Place plans to serve over 400 children and families annually through specialized grief support groups and its Grief-Informed Schools initiative, which partners with 30 school districts to implement grief-sensitive practices.

“The support from Thunderbirds Charities ensures we can continue to be a beacon of hope for grieving families,” said Kris Friedman, Executive Director of Billy’s Place. “This funding enables us to maintain and expand our dedicated team, ensuring that no child or family faces grief alone.”

Billy’s Place offers up to 11 monthly group sessions, utilizing evidence-based curricula that incorporate play therapy, art, and storytelling to help children express their emotions. Family events further foster healing and connection.

This grant continues a strong partnership with Thunderbirds Charities, which has previously awarded Billy’s Place to grow its programs.
