Providing Refuge for the Homeless

House of Refuge Sunnyslope, Inc. (HRS) is pleased to announce that it received a generous grant from Thunderbirds Charities to fund the renovation of six apartments at their new Mountain View property. The $50,000 grant provided remodeling of six apartments, including updates to lighting, kitchens, and bathrooms – creating, safe, clean homes for women and children to rebuild their lives and move out of homelessness.

The project addressed a desperate need, the Maricopa County 2023 Point-In-Time Count counted 9,642 homeless people in Maricopa County. This was an increase of 7% from the previous year. Of these, 51% are unsheltered. The top reason cited for being unsheltered was the lack of available housing units or shelter space. HRS responded to this escalating need by purchasing nine parcels containing 22 apartments that will provide more housing for women and children.

“Partners like Thunderbirds Charities have enabled us to quickly respond to the growing homeless crisis, resulting in a 45% increase in our capacity to provide safe, clean housing.” Julie Supplee, HRS CEO.
